History

On April 1, 1982, Hasenstab Architects opened its doors with four employees. Originally located in Canton, Ohio, we moved to Fairlawn, Ohio in 1984 and were involved in a variety of project types – including school, retail, postal facilities and healthcare projects – continuing the experience that the original group brought from several prominent local firms.

During the 1980s, Hasenstab grew with increasing commissions. A foundation for experience and expertise in health care was solidified with several large projects for local hospitals and health systems, most of which remain as our clients today.

In 1988, with an increasing number of projects and a growing staff, Hasenstab principals made a commitment to seek a new location and determine whether to build a new building or renovate existing space. During this process, an opportunity developed to participate in the rehabilitation of an old structure near downtown Akron. Although this building was indeed a “project,” its prominent location, visibility and architectural opportunities suggested that this was the right direction for us to pursue.

In 1991 and with 14 employees, we moved into our home at Union Point in Akron, Ohio. A former central bakery for a local grocery store chain, the six-story concrete frame building provided an opportunity for us to exercise our creativity not only in the design of our own offices, but for the entire building including all tenant spaces.

History

Through the 90’s, Hasenstab Architects emerged as a leader in the region’s healthcare design community, solidifying our reputation with repeat commissions for longstanding clients. The firm branched out geographically to include work outside the region and for larger-scale projects outside of health care. Corrections, higher education and municipal work were added as the firm grew, and four new principals were added during the first part of the decade. We have a history of repeat clients.

Today, the Hasenstab Architects staff numbers 48, half of which are registered architects. Our ownership group has increased to six. We continue to build upon 35 years of healthcare experience, along with emphasis in laboratory/research and educational facility design, in addition to a long list of various other building types. As well-respected leaders in the profession and community, Hasenstab Architects looks forward to the next 35 years of service to Northeast Ohio and beyond.
