Hasenstab is proud to report that the Summa Emergency Department at Green, is now open and serving the community’s emergency room needs.
The new ED, for which Hasenstab provided architectural, structural engineering, and interior design services, is located on the corner of Massillon and Graybill Road and offers expert care in a 22,000 square foot facility. With 14 exam rooms and two resuscitation rooms, as well as laboratory space, the ED expects to serve around 14,000 patients each year. The services available include bedside ultrasound imaging, radiology, ambulance transport, and 24-hour emergency care.
The project offered Hasenstab Architects the opportunity to help Summa overcome challenges. “One of the biggest challenges was providing a prominent presence from both directions for those traveling on Route 77, explained Bob Medziuch, Principal-in-Charge. The building program called for a single story building and a relative small footprint relative to the fast moving highway traffic. Our lead designer and Project Manager for the project, Dan Herstine, came up with the idea to utilize a tall masonry screen wall that could serve multiple functions. One function was to give the building a presence from the highway by adding mass, and the other function was to serve as a screen for the mechanical equipment. The building placement on the site was also studied very carefully, to allow for multiple façade exposure while traveling on the expressway.
An open-house on July 2nd included tours, giveaways, a ribbon-cutting, and free health screenings. The new ED opened to the public on July 9th. From the broken-boned to the bee-stung, the area’s patients have a new choice in emergency care thanks to Hasenstab and Summa Emergency Department at Green.
