Akron Children’s Hospital

Mahoning Valley Building A Addition

This addition was the first phase of a multi-phase master plan developed for the Beeghly campus initiated in 2014. The project encompasses a two-story, 55,800-square foot addition and minor renovations to Building ‘A’ at Akron Children Hospital’s Mahoning Valley Beeghly Campus.

The project enhances access and wayfinding by adding 171 new parking spaces and creating a new front door for the ‘A’ building. The new addition includes 47 exam rooms and shell space for 14 additional exam rooms and a future data center. Other spaces include a Sports Rehabilitation area, regionalized registration area and public amenities.

The 47 exam rooms are universally designed to accommodate both visiting specialists and full time practices.

The design was tested through card board mock-ups by all specialties to maximize patient, family and staff needs. Any specialty can be scheduled in any exam room, maximizing schedule flexibility.

Designers envisioned the building theme as “Re-connecting To Nature” – a nod to Akron’s “Backyard” theme, a connection to the existing Garden of Hope, the planned Riverwalk coming to this region, and a celebration of Mill Creek Metro Park – the first park district in the state of Ohio.

Gently sweeping curves emulate a river down the central corridor and act as a connector to the existing buildings. Materials emulate wood, water and other natural elements – connecting the interior to nature.
