Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron
Hasenstab Architects provided architectural and interior design services for the renovation and adaptive reuse of an existing (1917) Summit County building into Austen BioInnovation Institute’s permanent headquarters in downtown Akron. The Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron (ABIA) is a collaboration of Akron Children’s Hospital, Cleveland Clinic Akron General, Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), Summa Health System and The University of Akron. They focus on patient-centered innovation and commercialization at the intersection of biomaterials and medicine.
The $8 million, four-floor, 45,000 square foot ABIA facility houses administrative offices and support spaces, as well as product development, teaching/simulation center/learning resource areas and a six-station wet lab/cadaver lab.
Innovative ideas are generated in the Center for Biomaterials and Medicine; developed in the Medical Device Development Center; tested in the Center for Clinical Trials; evaluated, refined and used in simulated settings in the Center for Simulation & Integrated Healthcare Education; and then applied to treat patients in real clinical practice through initiatives such as community outreach to the medically underserved.
This building is LEED® Silver Certified.
