Summa Barberton Emergency Department
Hasenstab Architects provided master planning and architectural services to relocate the Emergency Department and increase the size from 9,970-sf to 31,270-sf. A total of 32 new ER treatment rooms accommodate more than 50,000 patients per year.
All treatment spaces are universally designed to accommodate multiple specialties. The new Emergency Department also has dedicated areas for the following spaces:
- 3 Triage Spaces
- 10 Bed Fast Track Unit
- Decontamination Area
- Digital Radiology Room
- Isolation and Bariatric Ready Rooms
The additions and renovations were completed in two phases. First, additions were constructed to the east and south sides of the hospital. The area where the new ED is now located originally contained the hospital’s cafeteria. By adding onto the east side of the hospital, the cafeteria was able to be relocated creating a more efficient dining area with the existing kitchen.
A new multipurpose room with five movable partitions was included in the shell space next to the new cafeteria/dining area to allow for enhanced staff development with classroom space and audio conferencing. Interior areas of the new shell spaces were built out, completing the cafeteria relocation, new dining area and conference area.
The next phase of construction included the renovation of the former cafeteria area and additions to the south side of the hospital to create the new space for the relocated Emergency Department.
