Weathervane Playhouse in Akron, Ohio is a 70’s era building. In order to accommodate a growing number of programs and productions, the playhouse needed to be updated and expanded. Hasenstab Architects provided architectural, structural engineering and interior design services to update the playhouse, while still respecting the distinctive architecture of this local landmark.
The addition – which doubled the size of Weathervane Playhouse’s existing lobby – provides administrative space, including several offices. New lighting and finishes enhance the ticket and gift shop areas – located at the interface of the new and existing building – tying all spaces together. Cloud-like ceiling treatments, seen through the building’s new glass facade, create visual interest and define the new lobby and entrance. Flexible auditorium seating, acoustical enhancements and new restrooms are also part of the project scope.
Challenges included a limited budget, scheduling of construction around a busy performance schedule and current building code requirements. Construction was completed in time for the beginning of Weathervane Playhouse’s 75th Anniversary Season.
