Behavioral Health Crisis Center Planning Study & Renovation
This project encompassed a 5,500 square foot renovation of St. Clair Hospital’s existing emergency department to create space for a behavioral health crisis unit.
The project began with a concept planning study. The design team worked closely with St. Clair staff to evaluate how the behavioral health crisis unit model could be adapted to fit the scale and operational requirements of the existing facility.
Several areas were considered, but it was determined that portions of the existing emergency department and cardiovascular step-down unit would be the best fit for the crisis unit.
The focal point of the behavioral health crisis unit design is the large, central room where each patient can be situated in their own recliner as opposed to a bed. Upon entering the unit, patients can quickly receive a comprehensive evaluation, begin therapy, and receive treatment, providing a streamlined approach to emergency behavioral health care. Open nurse stations and ligature-safe fixtures help ensure patient and staff safety, while natural lighting and calming finishes create a comfortable environment.
