Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron (ABIA)
Simulation Lab, Teaching Facility & Headquarters
Extensive renovations and adaptive reuse of an existing (1917) Summit County building created a permanent headquarters in downtown Akron for Austen BioInnovation Institute (ABIA). The four-floor, 48,000 square foot facility houses administrative offices and support spaces, as well as product development, teaching/simulation/ learning resource areas and a nine-station bio-skills/cadaver lab.
Innovative ideas are generated in the Center for Biomaterials and Medicine; developed in the Medical Device Development Center; tested in the Center for Clinical Trials; evaluated, refined and used in simulated settings in the Center for Simulation & Integrated Healthcare Education; and then applied to treat patients in real clinical practice through initiatives such as community outreach to the medically underserved.
